Dexter L. Bailey Jr.

Mr. Bailey began serving as the BCMS Director in 2008 and joined the CHS Band Staff in 2009. His duties including arranging all marching band music, functioning as the brass instructor, and conducting music rehearsals.


Mr. Bailey began his musical journey in Decatur, Georgia. At the age of 7, he began piano lessons and joined his elementary school band in the 6th grade playing the trumpet. Mr. Bailey continued studying trumpet in middle school and began studying trombone in the 8th grade. He furthered his musical study at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. During his high school tenure, Mr. Bailey served as principal trumpet in the jazz band, principal trumpet in the symphonic band, trumpet section leader in the marching band, and top student in the AP music theory class. Additionally, Mr. Bailey participated in the GMEA District IV Honor Band, Melvin Hodges All-Star Jazz Band, served as student arranger for the Redan HS “Blue Thunder” Marching Band, and received over $190,000 in scholarship offers from over 17 different universities.


Mr. Bailey continued to pursue his musical passion at Bethune-Cookman University, accepting a scholarship offer from the Department of Music. During his undergad tenure, he participated in the BCU Symphonic Band, BCU “Marching Wildcats” Marching, BCU Trumpet Choir, and BCU Pep Band, holding leadership positions in all four ensembles. In 2008, Mr. Bailey graduated from BCU Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. After restarting the band program at BCMS, Mr. Bailey enrolled at Boston University to pursue his Masters in Music Education. He completed his coursework and received his Masters in Music Education in 2014.


Outside of Bear Creek and Creekside, Mr. Bailey serves as a clinician for middle and high school bands throughout the state of Georgia. Additionally, he arranges music for over 20 middle and high schools in the Southeast, as well as Bethune-Cookman University and Edward Waters College band programs. During the summer, Mr. Bailey coordinates the BCU High School Summer Band Camp and serves as chief arranger for’s “Band of Champions” Marching Band. Mr. Bailey has a loving and supportive fiancée, Erin Holloway, and will be wedded on October 9th, 2016. In his free time, Mr. Bailey loves to produce his own music, skate, participate in various races, and spend time with his family and Linden-Shorts C.M.E. Church family.
